Asteria is an agency for ideas focused on creating innovative solutions for spatial storytelling, multimedia communication and museum exhibits. In over 20 years we have designed and produced the settings of more than 90 museums, exhibitions and installations throughout Italy. Since 2013 we have also operated internationally from our Paris office.

Contents

Presenting the contents of a museum entails shaping in-depth but also concise information, multifaceted and targeted, authoritative and entertaining. It means organizing and managing diverse scientific themes and translating their results into a popular form suitable for all types of public. It involves juggling through new interactive languages, multimedia technologies and sophisticated settings, without ever losing sight of the mechanisms of storytelling.

Graphics

Designing a museum graphics requires specific and complex skills, due to the variety and size of the surface areas involved and their scenographic impact. It means evaluating all ergonomic aspects, because exhibiting graphics are actually interfaces with a functionality and usability of their own. It requires being able to create exhibiting routes that are different according to age or targets and are also accessible to the visually impaired.

Hardware

Engineering a museum’s hardware involves assessing the use of equipment, the exhibition’s technological uniformity and various sustainability and functionality parameters. Technology plays a crucial role in providing scenographic power and emotional character to an exhibiting route. We must therefore choose appropriate hardware to ensure that multimedia stations and interactive installations have adequate perception qualities and allow easy maintenance.

Multimedia

Creating multimedia facilities for a museum is different than doing it on the web. A museum multimedia tool does not stand alone but is part of the overall exhibiting route and the story that is being told along it. If we work on the content and interactions of a multimedia tool without carefully considering it in relation with the whole exhibition, we risk creating interactive stations that are valid in themselves but not functional to the context.

Settings

Designing museum settings means to invent worlds where visitors are protagonists. While at the theatre we watch, as spectators, the actors using the stage, in a museum actors are also spectators: the design of the exhibition is fundamental to cultural communication. And while actors can be controlled, the behavior of visitors can only be predicted: we must design environments that take into account all possible interactions.

Videos

Producing a museum’s audiovisual products and animations requires specific skills, different from cinema and television ones. As part of the display route, a video is just one chapter in the exhibition script. That requires special attention in writing and filming, in the editing rhythm and the choice of musics. It means to be able to transform images into immersive and interactive environments that visitors can explore freely.
